Progress

So I started reading Midnight's Children and it has been excruciating so far. Rushdie's writing style is confusing and I don't really know what is going on, but I am going to struggle through. Discipline!

  1. I am a firm believer that while millions of people may enjoy a book and consider it a classic, if I don't like it, I just don't like it. I recently tried to read The Shack. Bestseller. Did not like it at all. ( I also HATE HATE HATE Romeo and Juliet. Sorry world.)

  2. Sybil, you are so right. This has always been my philosophy too, but I sometimes try to enforce discipline onto my reading habits. It never works! So, I'm moving on to Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John Le Carre. BTW, why didn't you like The Shack?

  3. The Shack was just too weird. It was strangely reminiscent of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Minus the swearing a drug use. You don't know what is real, you are wondering if the guy is losing it. It was just a really weird combination of things that I did not find pleasing. Plus, I tend to get a little sensitive about how God is portrayed in popular fiction. I know the book wasn't literally saying God is an old black woman, but it still bothered me. I didn't even get half way through. Maybe if I had finished I would have found something to like about it, but I didn't and don't really want to.
